Over the last several years VSA has seen a decline in the number of available referees.  In order to bridge the gap, Matt Plodinec, VSA’s Director of Referees says, “We are making a big push to encourage new youth and adults to join the referee ranks.  Not only does it help improve the gameday experience for our youth, it also gives younger referees a way to continue their soccer career after their playing days are over.  In addition, it is a great way to earn some money and to stay in shape.  Younger referees, who excel as officials, can also make a career out of it.”  He adds that there are benefits for those still playing or coaching as well.  “Almost every game I referee, I learn something new that helps me as a coach and would have helped me as a player.  It’s amazing how much you can see as a referee in terms of spacing, offside, and tactical positioning.”

The class is open to all new referees who are 12 or older.  (11 year olds can take the class, but can not legally be paid until they turn 12.)  Prior to the class there are 18 online modules that need to be completed.  In addition, there is an open book exam at the end of the class that is required in order to receive your certification.  In addition to the certification, the only other requirement is to get a uniform and a watch.  Total cost is approximately $150.  Younger referees can expect to earn up to $70 in a weekend and adult referees with minimal experience can earn as much as $4000 a season at the local level.
